Vipassana Meditation weekend
Our life is shaped to a substantial extent by our tendencies: latent, i.e. still hidden; manifest in our thoughts and emotions; and enacted in our behavior. Some of these tendencies are unwholesome: greed, aversion and confusion. They can hinder us and, in some cases, even sabotage the plans we have for our lives.
Vipassana is a practice of body and mind that can help us relinquish these unwholesome tendencies. This is done through the simultaneous training of discipline, concentration and insight. An important tool for developing insight is mindfulness: clear awareness of what happens and of our reactions to it.
At first, discipline restrains enacted tendencies, concentration calms manifest tendencies, and insight exposes and weakens latent tendencies. Eventually, working together, these three skills can uproot latent unwholesome tendencies and foster wholesome qualities such as generosity, loving-kindness and wisdom.
This city retreat weekend offers an opportunity to become more familiar with these processes and to begin applying the three skills directly in our experience. Their potential can be explored more deeply and developed further during intensive vipassana retreats.
